If you are searching for a 24 hour emergency dentist in Windsor in the middle of the night, here is the honest answer first. Almost no dental clinic in Windsor is open twenty four hours a day. What actually matters at 2am is knowing which problems cannot wait until morning and which can.
Go to a hospital emergency department now if
- Your face, jaw or neck is swelling, particularly if the swelling is spreading or starting to close an eye
- You are having trouble breathing or swallowing
- You have a fever alongside the dental pain
- You have taken a blow to the face and think the jaw may be broken
- Bleeding will not stop after twenty minutes of firm, continuous pressure
A hospital emergency department cannot do dental treatment, but it can drain an infection, manage pain and start antibiotics. For a spreading facial infection that is the right place to be overnight, and it is not something to sleep off.
It can usually wait until morning if
- A filling or crown has come out but the tooth is not painful
- A tooth is chipped and the edge is sharp but there is no bleeding or severe pain
- You have an aching tooth that eases with over the counter pain relief
- A wire or aligner is irritating your cheek
A knocked out adult tooth is the exception
If a permanent tooth has been knocked completely out, the clock matters more than anything else on this page. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, not tap water, and do not scrub it. If you can, put it straight back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk. Get to a dentist or a hospital within the hour.
What to do overnight
Keep your head elevated, since lying flat increases the throbbing. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, twenty minutes on and twenty off. Take the pain relief you would normally take and follow the packet. Do not hold an aspirin against the gum, which burns the tissue and does not help the tooth. Avoid very hot or very cold food and drink, and chew on the other side.
