What the CDCP is
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program that helps cover dental care for people without private dental insurance. It’s run by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life. It is not the same as OHIP, and it is not free dental care for everyone, it covers a defined list of services, and how much it pays depends on your household income.
Do you qualify?
You may be eligible if all of these are true:
- You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
- You do not have access to private dental insurance, including through a job, a spouse’s job, a pension, or a student plan.
- Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000.
- You filed your taxes for the previous year.
How much the plan covers depends on income. Applications go through the Government of Canada, not through us, search “Canadian Dental Care Plan apply” or call Service Canada. Once you’re approved, Sun Life sends you a member card with a start date. Bring that with you.
What the plan covers
The CDCP covers a broad range of everyday care, including exams and cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals, and dentures. Some treatments, such as crowns, need to be approved by Sun Life in advance. We handle that submission for you, so tell us early if you’re planning something bigger.
The plan does not cover cosmetic work such as whitening and veneers, and it does not cover orthodontics.
What you pay
We bill the CDCP directly, so there’s nothing to pay up front for covered services. Where a treatment isn’t fully covered by the plan, there may be a remaining balance. We’ll always tell you what that is, in writing, before we start anything, you will never get a surprise bill from us after the fact. If cost is a concern, say so. There is usually more than one way to treat something, and we’d rather find the option that works for you than have you leave a problem alone.

Applying for the 2026 to 2027 benefit year
Applications for the 2026 to 2027 Canadian Dental Care Plan benefit year are open. Coverage is not automatic year to year, so if you were covered previously it is worth confirming your coverage is current before your appointment rather than finding out at the front desk. You can apply or check your status on the Government of Canada CDCP page. Bring your CDCP member card or your client number to your visit and we will confirm what is covered before any treatment starts.
Covered by the Interim Federal Health Program instead?
