How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Cleaned?

The short answer most people have heard is every six months. That is a reasonable default for healthy gums, but it is a default, not a rule, and for a fair number of people it is the wrong interval in one direction or the other.

Where the six month figure comes from

It is not a biological number. It became standard because it is a practical, easy to remember interval that catches most problems while they are still small, and because most insurance plans are built around it. For someone with healthy gums, no history of gum disease and good home care, six months is genuinely fine.

When three or four months is the better interval

When longer than six months is reasonable

If you have healthy gums, little tartar, no fillings needing attention and you look after your teeth well, some people are fine at nine or twelve months. That is a decision to make with your dentist after looking at your gums, not on your own.

What a cleaning appointment actually includes

A hygienist removes the hard tartar that a toothbrush cannot shift, cleans below the gumline where gum disease starts, polishes the surfaces, and measures the gum pockets so any change is caught early. That measuring is the part patients notice least and the part that matters most, because it is what turns gum disease from something you find out about late into something you find out about early.

Why skipping it costs more than it saves

Cleanings and exams are the cheapest appointments in dentistry. The treatments that follow neglected gum disease and untreated decay, meaning fillings, root canals, crowns and eventually implants, are the most expensive. Skipping a cleaning does not remove a cost, it defers a larger one.
