About Root Canal Treatment in Windsor

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. When the inner pulp of a tooth becomes damaged due to deep decay, cracks, injury, or other concerns, a root canal can help remove the affected tissue, clean the inside of the tooth, and restore it to support long-term function.

You may be a candidate for root canal treatment if you have a tooth with significant decay, persistent sensitivity, ongoing discomfort, or signs of infection. During your visit, your dentist will assess the condition of your tooth and determine whether a root canal is the right option to help preserve your natural tooth.

If you are experiencing ongoing tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or discomfort when biting, a dental assessment can help identify the cause and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Persistent Tooth Pain

Ongoing or worsening tooth discomfort may indicate that the inner tissues of the tooth are affected and require professional assessment.

Sensitivity to Hot or Cold

Lingering sensitivity after exposure to hot or cold temperatures may be a sign of inflammation or damage inside the tooth.

Deep Tooth Decay

When decay reaches the inner portion of a tooth, root canal treatment may help remove the infection and preserve the remaining tooth structure.

Cracked or Injured Teeth

Damage caused by cracks, trauma, or injury can affect the inside of a tooth and may require treatment to prevent further concerns.

Swelling Around the Tooth

Swelling, tenderness, or changes around the gums may indicate an infection that requires dental care.

Protecting a Natural Tooth

A root canal can help save a tooth that might otherwise need to be removed, allowing you to maintain your natural smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a root canal painful?

Modern dental techniques allow root canal treatment to be performed comfortably. The procedure is designed to remove the source of infection or inflammation that may be causing discomfort, and your dentist will take steps to help keep you comfortable throughout treatment.

Signs that may indicate the need for a root canal include persistent tooth pain, sensitivity, swelling, or discomfort when chewing. Your dentist will use an examination and diagnostic tools to determine the cause of your symptoms.

In some cases, other treatments may be possible depending on the condition of the tooth. However, when the inner pulp is damaged or infected, root canal treatment may be recommended to help preserve the tooth.

After root canal treatment, your dentist may recommend a dental crown or another restoration to protect and strengthen the treated tooth, depending on the amount of remaining tooth structure.

The treatment timeline depends on the complexity of the tooth and your individual needs. Your dentist will explain what to expect during your appointment.

A tooth that has received root canal treatment should be cared for like your natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps support the health of the treated tooth.
